Udvartana
Udvartana is an Ayurvedic massage using herbal powders applied in upward strokes to exfoliate the skin, reduce fat, and stimulate circulation.

About Udvartana
Udvartana, derived from the Sanskrit word meaning 'upward rubbing', is a unique Ayurvedic therapy involving the application of herbal powders—either dry (Ruksha) or oil-based (Snigdha). The treatment is administered with firm, upward strokes across the body, typically following the direction opposite to hair growth. Udvartana enhances blood and lymph circulation, breaks down excess fat, detoxifies the skin, and promotes overall lightness and energy.
This therapy is especially beneficial for individuals with Kapha dosha imbalances, as it helps reduce sluggishness, water retention, and subcutaneous fat. The herbs used are carefully selected based on your dosha constitution and therapeutic goals, such as weight loss, improved skin tone, or metabolic activation.
Treatment Process
Consultation
An Ayurvedic practitioner will assess your dosha and imbalances to determine the appropriate type of Udvartana and herbal powders.
Preparation
The body may be lightly oiled if Snigdha Udvartana is selected. Herbal powders are warmed and ready for application.
Herbal Powder Application
The therapist applies dry or oil-based herbal powders using firm upward strokes across the entire body.
Massage Technique
Vigorous strokes in a pratiloma (opposite to hair growth) direction activate lymphatic drainage and exfoliate the skin.
Relaxation
Post-massage, you'll rest to allow the herbs to work on the tissues and support detoxification.
Steam or Warm Shower
A herbal steam or warm shower helps remove residual powder and opens pores for deeper cleansing.
